Jamaica has once again found a way to make a small-island victory feel much bigger than life.
A Jamaican man has come out on top in a viral Dip Hold Challenge that brought seven men representing different parts of the world together in a test of strength, endurance and determination.
The challenge, which has been making the rounds on social media, required each participant to hold onto a black railing with both arms while keeping his feet off the ground. The last man remaining would be declared the winner.
And when the final man was left hanging from the railing, it was the Jamaican representative still holding on.
How the Dip Hold Challenge Played Out
The competition started with seven men, including two representatives from Nigeria, along with competitors representing Chad, the United States, China, Europe and Jamaica.
The first elimination came just 1 minute and 25 seconds into the challenge when the first Nigerian competitor dropped out. With another Nigerian still in the competition, however, Nigeria remained in contention.
The next competitor to fall was the man representing Chad, who lasted 2 minutes and 8 seconds.
The eliminations then came quickly.
A competitor representing Europe was eliminated at approximately 2 minutes and 23 seconds, followed just six seconds later by the representative from the United States at 2 minutes and 29 seconds.
That left three men still fighting to stay in the challenge: Jamaica, China and Nigeria.
Nigeria Holds On, But China Takes Second
The remaining Nigerian competitor managed to significantly outlast his teammate, holding on until 5 minutes and 4 seconds.
His elimination secured third place, leaving China and Jamaica as the final two competitors.
The Chinese representative continued to hold on for another 1 minute and 51 seconds, eventually dropping at 6 minutes and 55 seconds.
That left the Jamaican man as the final competitor standing, or, in this case, hanging.
Jamaica had won.
‘We Likkle But We Tallawah’
The result quickly gave Jamaicans something to celebrate online, with the familiar phrase “We likkle but we tallawah” fitting the moment perfectly.
The Jamaican saying is often used to describe the resilience and strength associated with the island despite its relatively small size. In a competition featuring men representing countries and regions from around the world, seeing the Jamaican flag come out on top made the victory even sweeter for viewers.
And there was no complicated strategy involved. The Jamaican simply had to keep his grip, maintain his position, and refuse to give up.
That endurance ultimately separated him from the rest of the field.
A Simple Challenge That Requires Serious Strength
While the Dip Hold Challenge may look simple at first glance, holding the body in position for several minutes requires considerable upper-body endurance.
A dip hold is an isometric exercise, meaning the muscles are working to maintain a position rather than repeatedly moving through a range of motion. The exercise places significant demands on the triceps, shoulders, chest and core.
That makes the nearly seven-minute performance by the final competitors particularly impressive.
The men taking part also appeared comfortable with physical training, giving the challenge a competitive feel rather than looking like a random group of people being asked to attempt a difficult exercise.
Jamaica Gets Another Viral Win
For Jamaicans watching the challenge, the result was about more than simply winning a social-media competition.
It was another opportunity for the Jamaican flag to be seen on an international stage, this time in a test that came down to pure strength, stamina and mental toughness.
From the first elimination at 1:25 to the final drop at 6:55, the challenge kept viewers watching to see which country would produce the last man standing.
In the end, it was Jamaica.
Small island. Big endurance. We likkle, but we tallawah.
