A Jamaican traveller has taken on one of Argentina’s most remarkable natural attractions, walking directly across the ice of the famous Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia.
The traveller, who goes by AJ | Lifestyle on TikTok, documented the experience during a trip to Argentina and described the journey as unlike anything he had experienced before.
According to AJ, a tour guide told him during the excursion that he was the first Jamaican to walk on the glacier.
That claim has not been independently verified, but the moment added another memorable element to what was already an extraordinary experience for the Jamaican traveller.
From Jamaica to the Ice
For AJ, the adventure began with an early-morning journey towards the glacier.
As daylight appeared, he said the landscape surrounding him became increasingly impressive before he eventually arrived near the harbour and prepared to cross towards the glacier.
Having never seen snow or a glacier before, AJ said the surroundings felt surreal.
One of the details that immediately caught his attention was the colour of the ice.
He described seeing a shade of blue in the glacier that he had never witnessed in nature before.
The freezing conditions were another experience altogether, with AJ saying his lips and fingertips were feeling the effects of the cold.
Walking Onto Perito Moreno
AJ booked the experience with Hielo & Aventura, the company that operates guided glacier trekking experiences on Perito Moreno.
The journey included a boat crossing before the group continued on foot towards the glacier. AJ said they first walked across the surrounding land before reaching the point where they would begin their trek on the ice.
He had also prepared specifically for the conditions, purchasing additional thermal clothing and special footwear while using rented equipment for the excursion.
Before stepping onto the glacier, the guides fitted the group with crampons, which are specialised equipment attached to footwear to provide traction on ice.
From there, the experience became even more remarkable.
AJ described the air as cool but incredibly fresh, while the glacier appeared to flow naturally into the surrounding landscape.
He also noted that the experience could not simply be compared with walking on an ordinary frozen surface.
The glacier is constantly changing, meaning the route used by visitors is determined by the guides based on the conditions they encounter.
He Tasted Water From the Glacier
One of the most memorable moments came when AJ decided to taste water from the glacier.
After learning about the immense age of some of the ice, he jokingly described his decision as tasting what he considered to be “ancient” water.
He later confirmed that he survived the experience and continued his trek across the glacier.
For someone experiencing snow and a glacier for the first time, the opportunity to actually stand on the ice made the moment particularly meaningful.
A Special Toast With Glacial Ice
The experience ended with another unusual treat.
After completing the trek, the tour guides served the group chocolate and alcohol, but there was a special ingredient in the drinks.
The ice used for the toast was chipped directly from the glacier.
AJ appeared surprised by the experience as he showed the drink and pointed out where the ice had come from.
He took a sip and gave the drink his approval, raising his glass to what he described as a very special moment.
It was a fitting way to end an experience that had taken him thousands of miles from Jamaica and onto one of the world’s most distinctive landscapes.
A Glacier Inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Perito Moreno Glacier is located within Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina’s Santa Cruz Province.
The national park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 because of its exceptional natural beauty and importance to understanding glacial and geological processes.
UNESCO describes the park as a vast Patagonian landscape containing numerous glaciers and glacial lakes. The Perito Moreno Glacier is among its most famous features, with its massive wall meeting the waters of Lake Argentino.
Hielo & Aventura’s glacier excursions involve specialised equipment and trained mountain guides, with routes adjusted according to the changing conditions of the glacier.
An Experience AJ Won’t Soon Forget
As the trip came to an end, AJ reflected on the significance of being able to see the glacier up close rather than simply viewing it from a distance.
He said the experience was amazing and expressed gratitude for getting the opportunity to witness it.
From seeing snow for the first time to walking across ancient ice, drinking water from the glacier and finishing with a drink containing freshly chipped glacial ice, the journey gave the Jamaican traveller a collection of memories far removed from the tropical environment he knows at home.
He also got the chance to interact with other people during the trip, who eventually began asking him the familiar questions about Jamaica, including questions about jerk chicken, jerk sausage, beach life and curry goat.
Looking back at the massive glacier from the national park’s walkways, AJ also reflected on the effects of climate change and the possibility that future generations may experience a different landscape.
For now, however, he has his own remarkable story to tell: a Jamaican journeying to the far south of Argentina, stepping onto the ice of Perito Moreno and being told by his guide that he may have made history along the way.
